Do I need to file?

1. Maximum Exclusion is increased to $91,400 for 2009. It was $87,600 for 2008 and $85,700 in 2007.
If you are a US citizen or resident alien (green card holder) you are required to file a return if your gross income is at least the amount shown below:

For 2009 you could receive a refund of tax, even if you have not paid any federal tax, via the following 'refundable credits':

1. Additional Child Tax Credit: Upto $1K per child. This will be possible for persons who have some taxable income, and can apply to expatriates in countries that generally have higher taxes than in the US, ie UK, Japan, Netherlands.

2. Refundable American opportunity credit: A new Education Credit for 2009. Generally you should have taken a course in a US educational institution and be pursuing an undergraduate course.

3. Making Work pay credit. If single your adjusted gross income should not be more than $75K and if married it should not be more than $150K.
